It seemed like no sooner than fashion fans had tuned in, it was over. But the super-short, nine-minute presentation revealing Rihanna for River Island at London Fashion Week is being heralded as worth the wait.
The opening chart-topping track du jour laced with explicit lyrics should have tipped everyone off that we were in for something edgy and hard-hitting. The collection is exactly that.
The presentation was chock-full of everything one would expect the star to wear, translated for the everyday woman. It’s a bit of urban and understated; loud and ladylike; bold and bodacious.
Overall, Rihanna for River Island delivers an unmistakable 90’s vibe. From a palette perspective, the collection features mostly dark hues with a bit of sunshine yellow and scarlet thrown in. Island-inspired prints and florals also put in an appearance.
The presentation wouldn’t really have been Rihanna’s without sheer fabrics, sky-high slits, midriff-baring pieces and peek-a-boo features. Hoods also feature prominently in the designs–a nod to her thug-life obsession, it seems.
My thoughts? I think it’s a wow-worthy collection; not because of any particular display of design genius but because it is wearable. Rihanna has literally given fans who adore her as a fashion icon the opportunity to wear what she wears without breaking the bank. I’m predicting a sell-out success.
Rihanna for River Island is available at River Island stores and online on March 5, 2013. Opening Ceremony stores in the United States and Japan will also carry the collection.
